Deputy Jerry Don Rollins was awarded the 2008 Jim Normand Deputy of the Year Award. In recommending him for this award,
Major Jerome Hopewell stated that Deputy Rollins has been employed by the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office since August of 1993,
when he started his career as a Reserve Deputy. He was hired full time as a Dispatcher in September of 2003, and completed his P.O.S.T. Academy
in April of 2004. He has worked as a Patrol Deputy, in Community Policing, and is presently with ICAP and is a member of the Dive Search
and Rescue Team. Deputy Rollins has always been an outstanding deputy, committed to going above and beyond the call of duty. He is a great
example of a selfless commitment to serving others, and during Hurricane Gustav and its aftermath, he worked long hours clearing debris and
cutting trees. He has been commended for his actions on several occasions; however, his most courageous act was tying a rope to himself to
rescue an individual trapped in a vehicle in high flood waters. He swam through the rough water and brought the individual to safety.
Deputy Anna Caffery, a Corrections Officer at DC-1, was awarded the 2008 Corrections Officer of the Year Award. In nominating her for this award,
Warden Gregory Clark stated that Deputy Caffery, while serving in an entry level supervisory capacity, has shown that she is very responsible and
dependable. Deputy Caffery has employed initiative in completing projects, has trained other deputies in procedure and data entry, and is very
effective at multi-tasking, Deputy Caffery has been employed since June of 2001, and has repeatedly shown that she is an essential part of the
Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office.
